Integration of Smart Grids to Improve Power Quality PROJECT TITLE : Smart Grid Integration for Power Quality in Grid System ABSTRACT: Increased use of renewable energy and electronic loads in the electric grid, both of which pose challenges in terms of power quality and energy management. These penetrations will cause more harmonic distortion, and frequent load switching will cause flicker. In order to maintain power quality and manage energy in the grid system, this work describes an implementation of a power control scheme and a Communication method in smart grid integration. The smart grid integration includes voltage source converters connected to renewable energy sources, conventional energy generators, and storage devices. In order to maintain power quality requirements in distributed systems, voltage source converters operating in current controlled mode with hysteresis control are the major power control technique. The second method employs a distributed Communication architecture based on the Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System (EPICS) to manage all of the data generated in the grid system and assist in the creation of a smart grid for energy management. The test results are presented to show the effectiveness of the control and Communication architecture utilised in smart grid integration to preserve power quality.
