Blockchain in Education: A Systematic Review and Practical Case Studies


The introduction of Blockchain technology over the course of the past decade has resulted in the development of multiple use-cases of decentralization in a variety of different fields, one of which is education. This paper presents a novel bibliometric and qualitative analysis of Blockchain's application in education, with novel contributions on Blockchain's temporal development, emerging themes, and practical case studies on adoption and integration with already existing educational technologies. We place a primary emphasis on determining the key players in the market, the extent of demographic participation and adoption, the most pressing issues of the day, unresolved questions, and untapped opportunities for innovation. According to the findings of our research, the Blockchain technology has been around for approximately 13 years; however, its use in education did not become widespread until about 5 years ago. This research also reveals that the majority of efforts have been focused on reporting and verifying academic certificates and transcripts: only a very small number of research has focused on reporting and connecting comprehensive academic records such as learning behavior logs, learning contents, and assessment data. This is cause for concern due to the fact that the currently available education Blockchain systems do not take into account interoperability at the Blockchain level or the heterogeneous nature in which academic data is produced and consumed by different institutes. In the final part of this article, we present discussions on the implications of our findings, potential solutions, and aspects of education Blockchain research that can help to improve educational outcomes for a variety of stakeholders.
