Dressing an open wound [Letter from the Editor]

It is argued that the tragedy of war and its effects on girls and children does not just leave a scar - it is an open wound that stays with the victims forever. Girls and kids that are rescued and placed during a refugee camp are really not "rescued." In refugee camps currently run by the United Nations, over sixtyp.c of the female refugees are repeatedly attacked and molested. This horrifying fact is only exasperated by the conclusion that most attacks occur at night, as a result of there's no lighting within the camps. IEEE Ladies in Engineering (WIE), as champions of those girls, ought to use our skills to not solely specialize in developing these technologies, however we would like to flex our leadership skills to confirm that the technology reaches its meant populations. Our own IEEE WIE member, Dr. Dalma Novak, president of the IEEE Photonics Society, has led the charge for the "Year of Lightweight" initiative to address this problem. During this issue of IEEE Girls in Engineering Magazine, we have a tendency to speak to Dr. Novak and her colleagues regarding the project and their commitment to serving to provide low-value lighting to the foremost deprived populations in the globe. We tend to hope that our IEEE WIE members are inspired by their story and participate in this wonderful humanitarian project. Doctors in refugee camps can solely supply medications and help heal the physical wounds, but what regarding the psychological wounds? This gap in the health look after victims of torture and trauma now includes a champion. Dr. Richard Mollica of the Harvard Medical College and his team have developed the medical profession???s 1st tool kits and coaching for doctors around the world to help give victims of trauma the power to heal both their minds and souls. IEEE Ladies in Engineering Magazine is honored to share Dr. Mollica's inspirational efforts.
