ABSTRACT:

Hybrid excitation synchronous machines (HESMs), which combine the best features of traditional electrically excited synchronous machines (SMs) and permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs), are investigated. Such machines provide energy efficiency benefits over traditional field-winding-excited machines, especially in the lower power region upto a few megawatts. This paper studies the applicability of a hybrid excitation synchronous generator (HESG) to a marine diesel genset. Three HESG structures are proposed, and their performance in island operation are studied by the two-dimensional (2D) finite-element analysis. Comparison of the proposed constructions is performed.
