Heavy-Duty Vehicle Platooning for Sustainable Freight Transportation: A Cooperative Method to Enhance Safety and Efficiency

PROJECT TITLE :

Heavy-Duty Vehicle Platooning for Sustainable Freight Transportation: A Cooperative Method to Enhance Safety and Efficiency

ABSTRACT:

The current system of worldwide trade is essentially primarily based on transportation and Communication technology from the twentieth century. Advances in technology have led to an increasingly interconnected international market and reduced the prices of moving product, people, and technology around the globe [1]. Transportation is crucial to society, and also the demand for transportation is strongly linked to economic development. Specifically, road transportation is crucial since concerning 60% of all surface freight transportation (that includes road and rail transport) is completed on roads [a pair of]. Despite the vital role of road freight transportation within the economy, it's facing serious challenges, like those posed by increasing fuel prices and the requirement to cut back greenhouse gas emissions. On the other hand, the combination of knowledge and communication technologies to transportation systems-resulting in intelligent transportation systems-allows the event of cooperative ways to boost the protection and energy efficiency of transportation networks. This article focuses on one such cooperative approach, which is called platooning. The formation of a cluster of industrial quality vehicles (HDVs) at close intervehicular distances, known as a platoon (see Figure 1) will increase the fuel potency of the group by reducing the overall air drag. The safe operation of such platoons requires the automatic control of the velocity of the platoon vehicles also their intervehicular distance. Existing work on platooning has centered on the planning of controllers for these longitudinal dynamics, in which easy vehicle models are usually exploited and perfect environmental conditions, like flat roads, are generally assumed. The broader perspective of how platooning can be effectively exploited in a very freight transportation system has received less attention. Moreover, experimental validations of the fuel-saving potential offered by platooning have typically been performed by reproducing the proper conditio- s as assumed in the look of the automatic controllers. This text focuses on these 2 aspects by addressing the following 2 objectives.
