Wind Turbine Generators: Design and Implementation of a Variable Synthetic Inertia Controller

PROJECT TITLE :

Design and Implementation of a Variable Synthetic Inertia Controller for Wind Turbine Generators

ABSTRACT:

The rising use of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) and converter-connected power generation is reducing the overall inertia of the electricity system, which presents new Frequency Support issues (FS). For this reason and others, developing FS solutions for RES is critical if we are to keep the grid running smoothly. Wind Turbine Generator (WTG) inertial emulation (IEE) is proposed in this study to ensure that the system frequency remains stable, while also lowering the detrimental influence of rotor speed recovery on the secondary frequency decrease. Furthermore, the study gives a full description of the triggering logics used to activate and deactivate the FS, which makes it ideal for application in industrial controllers now in use in the market. First, the suggested controller is evaluated in a simple configuration to demonstrate its superiority over previously developed methods. This information is used to conduct further tests in a more realistic network in order to determine how much control has been exerted on frequency. The system's Rate of Change of Frequency has been reduced by 40%, while the frequency deviation at the transient nadir has been improved by a whopping 35%.
