Reliability-oriented NetWorking Planning for Meshed VSC-HVDC Grids

ABSTRACT:

A strategy for designing reliable high-voltage direct-current (HVdc) grid topologies based on dependability is presented in this study. Bi-level and multiobjective planning problems are formulated using the proposed steady-state model for HVdc grids. The power flow controllers (PFCs) are taken into account as well as dependability in the optimization model. It solves the optimal allocation of PFCs and overcomes the dimensionality curse in comparison to current approaches. Nondominated sorting genetic algorithm II is used to solve the upper-level problem. Minimizing PFC allocations and improving the least often utilised cache are some of the lower-level algorithms described in this paper, as well as a new, optimum-test algorithm for reliability evaluation. The proposed technique is tested on two different systems: the European Supergrid and a Chinese ultra-HVdc system. Several real-world examples demonstrate the utility of the suggested method in the design of high-voltage direct current grids. More than 70% of total time can be saved by employing the caching technique and the optimum-test algorithm.
