Fuzzy Logic Based MPPT for a Wind Energy Conversion System

ABSTRACT:

Another attractive and well-developed renewable energy resource, wind power has recently emerged. In order to connect a Wind Energy Conversion System (WECS) to the load or utility grid, a Power Electronic interface is required. An significant and challenging challenge is to control this interface, which consists of generator and grid-side converters. Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) is the primary reason for using the generator-side converter controller (MPPT). Fuzzy logic theory is used to improve the accuracy and speed of the traditional Hill Climbing Search (HCS) MPPT algorithm in this research. Due to the use of this newly designed algorithm, the system can now provide an accurate rotor speed reference, allowing it to continually harvest the wind's maximum energy. The Vienna rectifier is employed as the generator-side converter in WECSs because of its significant advantages. Sliding Mode Control (SMC), a non-linear control technique, is used in this work to achieve efficient speed control, which offers significant advantages over linear controllers. – Control method and modified MPPT algorithm are shown to perform well in simulations. SMC and PI controllers are also compared in terms of speed control performance.
