Optimal Power Flow for ACDC GridsFormulation, Convex Relaxation, Linear Approximation and Implementation

ABSTRACT:

Today's transmission systems would be incomplete without HVDC. Accurate models of HVDC converter stations' active and reactive power regulation capabilities are needed to study the functioning of power systems that include ac and dc grids, as well as ancillary services and security. Converting stations can be controlled using a variety of different methods. AC and DC grid optimal power flow models are developed in this article. There are a wide range of formulations, from non-linear convex to linearized, available in an open-source programme. Convex relaxation of a parameterized ac/dc converter model is created. It is possible to translate the standard ac optimal power flow formulations to dc optimal power flow formulations. A number of test examples, including up to 3120 ac nodes and 10 dc nodes and converters, are presented numerically.
