A Shoulder Surfing Resistant Graphical Authentication System - 2016
Authentication primarily based on passwords is used largely in applications for pc security and privacy. However, human actions like choosing dangerous passwords and inputting passwords in an insecure manner are considered ”the weakest link” within the authentication chain. Rather than arbitrary alphanumeric strings, users tend to decide on passwords either short or meaningful for straightforward memorization. With internet applications and mobile apps piling up, people will access these applications anytime and anywhere with varied devices. This evolution brings great convenience however also increases the likelihood of exposing passwords to shoulder surfing attacks. Attackers can observe directly or use external recording devices to gather users’ credentials. To overcome this downside, we have a tendency to proposed a unique authentication system PassMatrix, based on graphical passwords to resist shoulder surfing attacks. With a 1-time valid login indicator and circulative horizontal and vertical bars covering the entire scope of pass-images, PassMatrix offers no hint for attackers to work out or narrow down the password even they conduct multiple camera-based mostly attacks. We additionally implemented a PassMatrix prototype on Android and applied real user experiments to judge its memorability and usability. From the experimental result, the proposed system achieves higher resistance to shoulder surfing attacks while maintaining usability.
