Rich Pinch: Perception of Object Movement with Tactile Illusion

ABSTRACT:

Vibrotactile feedback is an efficient and economical approach for enriching interactive feedback. However, its effects are largely restricted to providing supplementary alarms or conveying the sense of simple object presence or contact. During this paper, we propose a unique tactile feedback methodology, referred to as Rich Pinch, based on the “out of body” tactile illusion for choosing and manipulating a virtual object employing a two-finger pinch gesture. Rich Pinch uses vibration motors connected solely to the two fingertips, but will induce illusory feedback, like tactile touch/contact and directional movement, as felt from the house between the fingers. We have a tendency to 1st experimentally verify that the “out of body” illusion technique will in fact exist when applied between the fingertips. Then, we have a tendency to compare 3 completely different tactile rendering functions to illustrate totally different resulting perceptual scales and argue to use the tangent-based mostly interpolation in its actual application for a better user performance and experience because of its near-linear perceptual response. Finally, we assess the user expertise (specializing in the perception of the item movement of the chosen object) of the proposed pinch technique by comparing it to the traditional contact-based technique. Our results indicate that, with Made Pinch, users were able to perceive rich dynamic feedback, and clearly most well-liked it over the traditional method.
