PROJECT TITLE :

How do People Make Sense of Unfamiliar Visualizations?: A Grounded Model of Novice's Information Visualization Sensemaking

ABSTRACT:

During this paper, we tend to would really like to research how people make sense of unfamiliar info visualizations. In order to achieve the analysis goal, we tend to conducted a qualitative study by observing thirteen participants after they endeavored to create sense of 3 unfamiliar visualizations (i.e., a parallel-coordinates plot, a chord diagram, and a treemap) that they encountered for the primary time. We tend to collected data as well as audio/video record of assume-aloud sessions and semi-structured interview; and analyzed the info using the grounded theory method. The primary results of this study is a grounded model of NOvice's information Vlsualization Sensemaking (NOVIS model), that consists of the 5 major cognitive activities: encountering visualization, constructing a frame, exploring visualization, questioning the frame, and floundering on visualization. We tend to introduce the NOVIS model by explaining the five activities with representative quotes from our participants. We also explore the dynamics within the model. Lastly, we tend to compare with other existing models and share additional analysis directions that arose from our observations.
