Out-of-Step and Single Phasing Protection of Synchronous Chipper Motors

ABSTRACT:

Chipper motors in pulp and paper mill setting are of special design-the stability on impact masses is one vital consideration. The power issue below normal operation will continuously swing due to varying masses. This paper describes the guesswork-free rigorous calculations of pull-out (out-of-step) power issue based on the parameter of an actual installation. Single phasing is very a rare occurrence; however, such an occurrence has been experienced in an installation because of overheating and arcing at the fuse clips during a NEMA E2 starter of a chipper motor. Discussions on the only-section protection of synchronous motors and suggested settings are provided.
