VMbuddies: Coordinating Live Migration of Multi-Tier Applications in Cloud Environments

PROJECT TITLE :

VMbuddies: Coordinating Live Migration of Multi-Tier Applications in Cloud Environments

ABSTRACT:

Enabled by virtualization technologies, numerous multi-tier applications (such as internet applications) are hosted by virtual machines (VMs) in cloud data centers. Live migration of multi-tier applications across geographically distributed data centers is important for load management, power saving, routine server maintenance and quality-of-service. Totally different from a single-VM migration, VMs in a multi-tier application are closely correlated, that results in a correlated VM migrations downside. Current live migration algorithms for single-VM cause important application performance degradation because intermediate knowledge exchange between completely different VMs suffers comparatively low bandwidth and high latency across distributed knowledge centers. During this paper, we tend to design and implement a coordination system known as VMbuddies for correlated VM migrations within the cloud. Significantly, we have a tendency to propose an adaptive network bandwidth allocation algorithm to attenuate the migration cost in terms of migration completion time, network traffic and migration downtime. Experiments using a public benchmark show that VMbuddies considerably reduces the performance degradation and migration value of multi-tier applications.
