PROJECT TITLE :

Transferred Potential—A Hidden Killer of Many Linemen

ABSTRACT:

The causes of electrical accidents that occur throughout maintenance of power lines are sometimes not traceable. Unfortunately, a grounding practice which has been widely adopted in the utility trade in India, U.K., and some other countries unintentionally causes so several fatal accidents every year. The conclusion was arrived once analyzing some fatal accidents. This practice of protective grounding continues to be continued by many distribution corporations while not realizing the hazards concerned. For de-energized line maintenance, grounding the road at source finish is commonly practiced for the aim of private protection. This paper explains how this safety follow turns into hazard by transferring the substation ground grid potential to the worksite and why this transferred potential can't be controlled by any means that in three-wire overhead distribution systems that run with no separated ground wire. This paper suggests the answer to avoid the transferred potential and to describe it in IEEE Std. 1048—Guide for Protective Grounding of Power Lines, IEEE Std. eighty-200zero—Guide for Safety in AC Substation Grounding, British Std. 7430—Code of Observe for Earthing, and Indian Std. 3043—Code of Apply for Earthing to bring an finish to the accidents caused by this safety observe.
