Centralized power generation and widespread distribution contribute to major vulnerabilities for US energy. To make sure secure power grid systems for the longer term, engineers face daunting challenges: How will they rethink the design of monitoring and management systems that are a lot of robust and localized, while also working with a lot of renewable resources and aiming for greater nimbleness in recovery?
