BCH-coded UWOC Link Experimental Demonstration and Evaluation for Power-Efficient Underwater Sensor Nodes

PROJECT TITLE :

Experimental Demonstration and Evaluation of BCH-Coded UWOC Link for Power-Efficient Underwater Sensor Nodes

ABSTRACT:

Turbidity, suspended particles, small bubbles, and turbulence are some of the obstacles that mobile nodes operating in underwater environments may face when attempting to communicate with one another. Absorption and scattering are caused by these factors, which ultimately result in optical signal corruption. Error-correcting codes can be utilized to repair specific corrupted bits and, as a result, reduce the number of errors that occur within a channel. To improve the communication performance between power-efficient sensor nodes, this study proposes the use of a Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem (BCH) (31, 16)-coded underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) system. The BCH-coded system that is being proposed requires a reasonable amount of computing capability, and because it is powered by a battery, the node will be able to have an on-site data processing unit as well as untethered communication. The encoder and decoder algorithms of the BCH code are coded to run on an Atmel ATmega128A micro-controller and are implemented on the Embedded C software. Simulation of the effects of scattering and absorption, noise caused by surrounding and ambient light, turbidity, air bubbles, and turbulence in an underwater natural environment are used to evaluate the performance of the system. Additionally, a 0.5 Mbps BCH-coded link achieves a 93.5% PSR, which is 6% better than that of the uncoded system, at a moderate turbidity level of 64 NTU, in the presence of weak turbulence (induced by a pump at a 2.5 L/min displacement rate) and air bubbles (generated by an aerating jet at an airflow rate of about 1.2 L/min ). This is accomplished in an environment where there
