Cost-effective hybrid RF/FSO backhaul solution for next generation wireless systems

ABSTRACT:

The speedy pace of demand for mobile knowledge services and therefore the limited offer of capability in the current wireless access networks infrastructure are leading network operators to increase the density of base station deployments to enhance network performance. This densification, made potential by small-cell deployment, additionally brings a completely unique set of challenges, specifically related to the cost of ownership, in that backhaul is of primary concern. This article proposes a cost-effective hybrid RF/free-area optical (FSO) answer to mix the benefits of RF backhauls (low cost, NLOS applications) and FSO backhauls (high-rate, low latency). To initial illustrate the value advantages of the RF backhaul answer, the first half of this article presents a business case of NLOS wireless RF backhaul, which has a low cost of ownership as compared to other backhaul candidates. RF backhaul, however, is limited by latency issues. On the opposite side, an FSO answer, that offers higher latency and better knowledge rate than RF backhauls, remains sensitive to weather and nature conditions (e.g., rain, fog). To mix RF and FSO advantages, the second part of this text proposes a lowcost hybrid RF/FSO resolution, wherein base stations are connected to each alternative using either optical fiber or hybrid RF/FSO links. This half addresses the matter of minimizing the value of backhaul designing below reliability, connectivity, and data rate constraints, and proposes selecting the appropriate price-effective backhaul connection between BSs (i.e., either OF or hybrid RF/FSO) using graph theory techniques.
