A step forward in the characterization of the partial discharge phenomenon and the degradation of insulating materials through nonlinear analysis of time series

PROJECT TITLE :

A step forward in the characterization of the partial discharge phenomenon and the degradation of insulating materials through nonlinear analysis of time series

ABSTRACT :

The partial discharge (PD) phenomenon is an electrical discharge that affects solely part of a dielectric connecting 2 conductors [1]. This process could occur within the vacuoles of solid insulation, in gas bubbles in insulating liquids, or between dielectric layers. PDs can also occur on spikes or sharp edges of metal surfaces. Typically, the PDs affect the insulator integrity solely if it persists for a very long time. But, the continuous unleash of small amounts of energy may cause a slow and progressive deterioration of the dielectric which will cause its final breakdown [2], [three]. The degradation rate depends additional or less on the microscopic structure of the dielectric, the production method, the sorts of electrical stresses, and different operating conditions [4]. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the matter wasn't even recognized. However, after the center of the century, along with the introduction of new dielectrics, the development of additional compact insulators, and a general increase within the operating voltages, diagnostics of PDs have become a primary issue in electrical engineering [five]. Today, measuring PDs could be a common observe even in operational medium- and high-voltage devices. The data gathered are helpful to work out the weak points of the components before irreversible injury happens. So, PD detection and recognition became necessary tools for the evaluation of insulating degradation in giant power devices. The phase ϕ, the apparent charge q, and also the prevalence n have typically been accepted as the basic parameters for the pattern recognition of PDs by means that of the standardized algorithm termed section-resolved PD analysis (PRPDA) [half-dozen].
