Qualification and Quantification of Reserves in Power Systems Under High Wind Generation Penetration Considering Demand Response
ABSTRACT:
The presence of high levels of renewable energy resources (RES) and especially wind power production poses technical and economic challenges to system operators, which underneath this reality have to procure more ancillary services (AS) through numerous balancing mechanisms, so as to take care of the generation-consumption balance and to ensure the security of the grid. Traditionally, these essential services had been procured only from the generation side, nonetheless the present perception has begun to acknowledge the demand facet as an important asset that may improve the reliability of a power system, providing notable benefits. During this study, a 2-stage stochastic programming model, representing the day-ahead market clearing procedure on an hourly basis and the particular minute-to-minute operation of the ability system, is developed comprising different services that specifically address various disturbance sources of the conventional operation of a power system, particularly intra-hour load variation, intra-hour wind variation, in addition to generating unit and transmission line outages.
