A Step Counting Algorithm for Smartphone Users: Design and Implementation

ABSTRACT:

The step count is a crucial data for developing services for smartphone users. Most existing step counting solutions limit that: the phone has got to be fixed to the user and therefore the user cannot use the phone naturally while walking. We will see that these restrictions are inconvenient for users. During this paper, we tend to propose a step calculation algorithm, that can relieve the higher than restrictions and can count users' steps exactly. The proposed algorithm consists of two phases. The primary section collects linear acceleration and gravity values from the smartphone's accelerometer. Then, this phase derives the horizontal parts of the perceived linear acceleration values and identifies attainable begin points of periodical regular fluctuations (of linear acceleration measurements). The second section adopts the concept of correlation coefficients to identify whether the collected sensing measurements exhibit similar tendencies and calculates step counts. In this paper, we implement the proposed method on the android platform. The experiment results indicate that the proposed theme will analyze gaits accurately and count steps effectively.
