Backhauling 5G small cells: A radio resource management perspective


Developing economical backhauling solutions for small cells is considered as one of the foremost important challenges in the rollout of the upcoming 5G cellular systems where large numbers of tiny cells can be deployed. In this text, we tend to first review little cell evolutions and the ensuing radio access network architecture evolution toward heterogeneity and centralized baseband processing. The backhaul answer, that is principally determined by the provision of existing backhaul infrastructures and repair demand, can cause a heterogeneous backhaul network architecture. Radio resource management problems including cell association, and interference management and scheduling with inter-node coordination, with how they're related to backhaul solutions are mentioned. Based on the present RRM solutions and their limitations in multi-tier 5G systems with heterogeneous backhaul network design, backhaul- aware RRM methods are envisioned. Results from a easy case study of joint cell association and bandwidth allocation with a huge MIMO-based mostly in-band wireless backhauling framework are presented to demonstrate the performance gain with backhaul-aware RRM during a multi-tier cellular RAN. Many connected open analysis problems are highlighted, and doable solution approaches are briefly mentioned.
