VisOHC: Designing Visual Analytics for Online Health Communities

ABSTRACT:

Through on-line health communities (OHCs), patients and caregivers exchange their illness experiences and ways for overcoming the illness, and offer emotional support. To facilitate healthy and spirited conversations in these communities, their members ought to be continuously monitored and nurtured by OHC administrators. The main challenge of OHC administrators' tasks lies in understanding the various dimensions of conversation threads that result in productive discussions in their communities. In this paper, we tend to gift a style study in that 3 domain professional teams participated, an OHC researcher and two OHC directors of online health communities, which was conducted to find with a visual analytic answer. Through our design study, we tend to characterised the domain goals of OHC directors and derived tasks to achieve these goals. As a results of this study, we have a tendency to propose a system known as VisOHC, which visualizes individual OHC conversation threads as collapsed boxes-a visual metaphor of conversation threads. Also, we have a tendency to augmented the posters' reply authorship network with marks and/or beams to point out conversation dynamics within threads. We conjointly developed distinctive measures tailored to the characteristics of OHCs, which will be encoded for thread visualizations at the users' requests. Our observation of the 2 administrators whereas using VisOHC showed that it supports their tasks and divulges interesting insights into on-line health communities. Finally, we have a tendency to share our methodological lessons on probing visual styles along with domain specialists by permitting them to freely encode measurements into visual variables.
