ABSTRACT:

Back-to-back starting is a widely accepted beginning method for pumped storage units. A back-to-back beginning model of pumped storage units was engineered using the ElectroMagnetic Transients Program together with DC (EMTDC) software package. The short-circuit fault during back-to-back beginning was investigated for the first time. The beginning process was simulated and compared with real information from a pumped storage power plant in northeast China. The rotor speed and therefore the impact of resistance throughout fault period were additionally mentioned. The results showed that the fault current has vital magnitude and low-frequency characteristic. Recommendations were provided to understand secure and reliable fault clearance during back-to-back starting primarily based on the fault characteristics and real de-excitation check results of the pumped storage power plant.
