Balancing Income and User Utility in Spectrum Allocation

ABSTRACT:

To match wireless users’ soaring traffic demand, spectrum regulators are considering allocating further spectrum to the wireless market. There are 2 major directions for the spectrum allocation: licensed (e.g., 4G cellular service) and unlicensed services (e.g., Super Wi-Fi service). The 4G service provides a ubiquitous coverage, has a higher spectrum efficiency, and typically charges users a high service price. The Super Wi-Fi service features a limited coverage, a lower spectrum potency, but typically charges users a coffee service worth. The spectrum regulator currently merely allocates the spectrum to maximise its income, however such an income-centric allocation will not guarantee the most effective spectrum utilization by the users. This motivates us to style a new spectrum allocation theme which jointly considers the spectrum regulator’s income and also the users’ mixture utility by investigating three market tiers: the spectrum regulator, 4G and Super Wi-Fi operator coalitions, and every one the wireless users. We formulate it as a 3-stage game and derive the distinctive subgame excellent equilibrium. Compared with the traditional income-centric allocation, we tend to prove that the proposed scheme considerably improves users’ combination utility with a restricted spectrum regulator’s income loss.
