PROJECT TITLE :

Scatterometer use for oil spill measurements

ABSTRACT:

Our results show that the Deepwater Horizon oil spill is detectable by ASCAT. We tend to account for low wind speed oil look-alikes by comparing ASCAT measurements against NWP information. The estimated size and shape validates well with NOAA estimates for many of the spill. It's remarkable that a comparatively coarse resolution spaceborne radar will map the oil spill - this methodology wouldn't work still for smaller oil spills or those spanning a shorter time amount. This attests to how giant of a control the Deepwater Horizon oil spill created.
